Single soldiers using online video dating services should practice before meeting the other person by simply looking in the mirror.
According to Skype, which recently ran the first cross-country speed dating event with Speeddater.co.uk, the mirror will show exactly how a person will appear on camera.
It also recommended recording a Skype video card and watching the footage back.
People should try and look as natural as possible and if the user cannot get this right initially, they should practice until they get it right, Skype advised.
Returning to a default smile can also help the date relax, the organisation added.
"There is no doubt that in years to come the experience of dating via video will be commonplace," commented flirt diva Sue Ostler
"Now is absolutely the time to start preparing for it," she added.
Research from Lindt recently showed that 50 per cent of women expect to be the focus of their date’s attention throughout the evening.
