Sheffield residents wishing to show how much they support soldiers gathered for a fundraising event in memory of a troop who died on duty.

Cheryl Routledge planned a poker tournament in honour of her son Corporal Liam Riley and all the proceeds went to Help for Heroes, the Star reports.

Those who attended the event raised £24,000 in just one night and Ms Routledge says the support she has received is "simply staggering".

She now plans to continue the Dusk Till Dawn fundraising efforts with another poker tournament next year and hopes to reach a £45,000 target.

Chief executive of Help for Heroes Bryn Parry – who set up the charity in 2007 – comments: "This event is a wonderful example of people having a good idea, rallying support and having a great deal of fun while they raise money for a wonderful cause."

He thanked Corporal Liam Riley's family for all their efforts that help the organisation to carry out its work.
