People take an average of 14 dates to tell each other that they love them, a new survey has found.

Typically, couples will go out twice a week, which means it takes them seven weeks to feel they are ready to say the big three words, the Daily Mail reports.

Other findings about the dating process include that after seven days people will usually share their first kiss, while four dates is the average time they wait before having sex.

Liya Step, a 22-year-old student who has uses online dating websites, said: "Obviously all relationships are different but these first-time figures look right for me and my girlfriends."

She thinks it is possible to get to know a man fairly well after just four dates, but there is no point introducing him to friends until a woman is confident their is real chemistry between the pair.

Ms Step added her parents only meet fellas she is "deadly serious" about.
