Army penpals might find they strike up a correspondence that lasts many decades.

This was the case for two penpals from Germany and New Zealand, who began writing to each other as teenagers, the Manawatu Standard reports.

Winton Funnell selected Heinz Boess out of a list of names he was given at school when his class began a penpal project.

The pair wrote to each other for years, until Mr Boess left his home country of Germany and they lost touch for over 60 years.

But when the recent earthquake in New Zealand occurred – which struck Christchurch on February 22nd – Mr Boess wrote to Mr Funnel, who received the letter when the current occupant of his old home looked him up in the phone book.

The two penpals have now rekindled their friendship and have begun corresponding again and catching up on the past few decades, the news source reveals.
