Army penpals might find they enjoy writing the occasional letter by hand, particularly if they are accustomed to using computers to correspond.

Ross McSwain from the San Angelo Standard Times explains he previously communicated with a penpal for a number of years.

Physically writing a letter allowed his acquaintance to know the message had been carefully considered by the person who had composed it.

Mr McSwain worries slightly that younger generations might not ever consider doing the same, as they are "mesmerised" by the number of gadgets on offer.

Having a penpal to share details about everyday life and interests with can be hugely rewarding, even if the two individuals never meet in person, the writer notes.

And people could even find love in this way, as the Daily Mail recently revealed Christine and Chris Rae married just four months after they became penpals on the internet and noticed a connection between each other.
