Everyone says that dogs are man's best friend, but people might have to change their minds once they hear two macaw parrots barking.

Elvis and Cilla learned how to mimic a canine shriek after hearing a neighbour's pet.

So frightening is their snarl that owner Trevor Bate has been using them as guards in his security company for the last year.

Mr Bate observed: "We thought this would be an ideal way of saving money on a guard dog."

The birds now stand outside the MP Guarding security company in Telford, Shropshire and make sure that strangers do not get access.

However, the pair are not all mean and can also say a range of others words and phrases.

I can just imagine the shock on people's faces when they see two parrots barking at them, but then the species is well known for being able to mimic.

An African grey called Mittu was recently found to be able to speak both English and Urdu.
