A soldier who lost the use of both his legs while serving on the frontline in Iraq has been nominated for an award in recognition of his fundraising efforts.

Major Phil Packer, who took 13 days to complete the London Marathon with the use of crutches last year, is one of four people shortlisted for the 2010 Runner’s World Jane Tomlinson Inspiration Award, the Daily Telegraph reports.

His marathon mission in 2009 was completed just one month after the soldier had started to walk again following his injury.

This year, he will attempt to cross the finish line in just 26 hours to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

However, running is not the only activity that Major Packer has taken part in since returning from Iraq – he has also rowed across the English Channel and skydived with the Red Devils.

The Gazette recently reported that former soldier David Beech is soon set to embark on an 84-mile coast-to-coast trek to raise money for Help for Heroes.
