A 70-year-old woman has shown her support for servicemen and women inured while fighting on the front line by taking part in a parachute jump.

Raye Halstead raised £1,700 for Help for Heroes (H4H) by completing the daring challenge near Lancaster, Pendle Today reports.

Ms Halstead – who has worked for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for 36 years and supported a number of good causes throughout her life – took the leap around her birthday in February, ensuring the milestone was one to remember.

She explained seeing a wounded soldier getting on with life with a smile on his face gave her the inspiration to take the plunge, adding: "I have a DVD to relive the event. It was a thrill of a lifetime."

Ms Halstead expressed her thanks to everyone who supported her fundraising efforts, adding she has always wanted to carry out a daring deed to generate cash for a worthy cause.
