A biking challenge to support soldiers aims to raise some £10,000 for the British Legion and Help for Heroes.

The feat will see Colin Kirby-Green follow the locations visited by his father – a World War II prisoner of war (POW) whose story was told in The Great Escape – the BBC reports.

Mr Kirby-Green will take a two-week tour covering some 3,000 miles on a period-style Triumph motorcycle around Europe.

He is taking on the mission in honour of his father, Squadron Leader Thomas Kirby-Green, who was shot by the Gestapo after he managed to escape from the Stalag Luft prison camp in 1944.

"It's a great privilege to be taken along because I've never visited my father's grave before," Mr Kirby-Green is quoted as saying.

His mission – dubbed the Great Escape 2 – is set to begin in Kent on June 4th.

The challenge's website notes there will be a team of riders taking part in the mission, with seven Triumph Bonneville motorcycles being supplied for the event.
