Some £11,275 has been raised for Help for Heroes thanks to the efforts of a team of 23 hikers.

The group completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which involves trekking 24 miles and taking in 5,000 ft of climbing in the Pennines, the Sun reports.

Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough are the three peaks they had to conquer, while all of this had to be completed in 12 hours.

Katie Gordon finished fastest of all the women taking part in ten hours and 40 minutes and said: "We knew it was going to be tough – just walking 24 miles would be difficult – but when you add in the peaks it's really something."

She admitted the day after completing the challenge she was in agony, despite the fact she considers herself to be a fit person.

However, Ms Gordon observed her pain is nothing compared to the struggles that many members of the armed forces go through everyday.
