Online daters who decide to meet their potential partner for the first time would be wise to bear a few tips in mind when planning the rendez-vous.

Dating expert Laura Bilotta, who has set up her own matchmaking service, tells Canadian publication Metro London there are certain things that couples should or should not do.

"Some people tend to be shy, so if you ask them questions where they have to speak, they'll probably open up quicker. [Think] open-ended questions so it's not just a yes/no answer," she suggests.

Those who think they have to go out for a meal on a first date might find other activities more enjoyable.

Ms Bilotta claims the former option can be a bit awkward, but keeping things light by heading for a coffee or a walk could be more effective.

Another point to remember is not to discuss past relationships, as it is important not to give the impression that an ex is still in the picture.

A recent article in the Independent suggested people follow dating etiquette when they are chatting online and remember their manners.
