If singletons are trying to jazz up their online profile, they should try to make it sound snappy and original.

This is the advice offered by personal dating coach Peter Spalton – who is a member of the advisory board at the Academy of Sex and Relationships – and he noted it is a good idea to write down 20 words or phrases that sum them up.

From this list, they can then whittle down the attributes to give a clear indication of the kind of person they are.

Mr Spalton added: "You need to say what you enjoy doing and the type of person you are looking for."

When people are browsing through the messages of potential dates, they will tend to make their minds up "fairly quickly" about whether or not to take it any further, the expert remarked.

Because of this, individuals need to attract the attention of others through their words and a good profile picture.
