The online dating phenomenon is truly a global trend, with people in the US the latest to be described as keen to find love on the internet.

New findings from the Pew Research Center showed 11 per cent of all internet users in the country and nine per cent of American adults said they have some experience of online dating.

It marks a sharp rise from 2008, when the same study revealed only three per cent of adults in the States had turned to the web to find a new partner.

Aaron Smith, the report's main author, said: "Online dating has become much more culturally accepted in recent years. Americans are now much more likely to count an online dater among their friends and family."

As online dating continues to be a more popular option, its presence could grow in all four corners of the world.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801651723-ADNFCR
