Online dating is the second-most popular way for people to meet in the US, newly-released research has found.

The convenience of the medium is one of the main reasons for its popularity.

Harry Reis, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester – which has over 9,000 students – and one of the five co-authors of the study, noted the web has given courtships a "new and much needed twist".

"The internet holds great promise for helping adults form healthy and supportive romantic partnerships," Mr Reis added.

According to the investigation, the only way people are more likely to meet a partner is through friends.

However, the researchers observed that comparing so many profiles can lead individuals to develop a "shopping" mentality and become too picky.

Because of this, singletons have to make sure they are realistic when it comes to setting out what their ideal man or woman must have.
