Single soldiers looking to make the best possible impression on their online dating profile would be wise to take time when choosing pictures.

Peter Spalton, founder of thedatingdoctor.co.uk, suggests: "They need a series of pictures. The main profile picture needs to be head and shoulders.

"You mustn't stare at the camera – you don't want to look like a rabbit in the headlights."

It is also important to consider what is in the background of such shots, as dirty washing or similarly inappropriate objects will not be well received.

Updating the image depending on the time of year is also a good idea, so summer snaps require bright lighting, while many people look slightly different in the winter.

Finally, Mr Spalton advises having a full-length picture that shows a person's real body shape, as singletons like to be able to see this for themselves.

People might find they prefer to use their smartphones to browse such platforms, rather than a computer, as mobile consultant and digital trainer at the IDM Rob Thurner recently claimed approximately 28 per cent of all internet use is now carried out on these handy gadgets.
