The majority of single people in the UK and elsewhere go in search of that someone special via online dating sites, new research has found.

A survey by forcespenpals.co.uk recently revealed that 80 per cent of single guys and girls look to the internet to find love, while 29 per cent opted for blind dates and 11 per cent have used speed dating.

The study of 500 people found that a good sense of humour is the number one attribute most singles search for, followed by affection and kind-heartedness.

When it comes to developing a relationship, getting to know somebody’s personality was most important for 60 per cent of respondents, followed by a good sense of humour, with 22 per cent, while just 0.8 per cent said sex.

Bruno Mustone, managing director at the website, said the internet has added a whole new dimension to the dating game.

"The internet enables daters to meet people around the world, rather than just from their local area, increasing their chances of meeting Mr or Miss Right," he stated.

Mr Mustone added that singles can chat to each other first, giving the opportunity to get to know each other before meeting for the first time.

A report commissioned by Virgin Media found that a fifth of guys feel anxious if they cannot access online dating sites during the day.
