Single soldiers may view having an account on an online dating website as an extension of their existing social networking personas.

Young people in their twenties in particular have adapted to dating online, as it slots in with their other activities via the internet, reports the Independent.

The newspaper pointed out most people of this age already spend a lot of their time on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, with online dating fitting in with this.

But it claimed meeting girls online is the opposite of what these sites do, as it is all about forming new relationships, rather than keeping track of existing ones.

"Typically, at this stage in their lives, twenty-somethings want it all," said the newspaper.

"They're looking for looks, money, ambition, honesty and above all, someone who they can build a future with."

James Preece, who is known as The Dating Guru, recently explained a profile picture is essential for those signing up for online dating.
