Single soldiers who want to save a bit of money could try online dating.

Peter Spalton, founder of thedatingdoctor.co.uk, suggests the platform is ideal in times of recession.

"You don't have to go out drinking in a bar or club, or dinner date clubs, all those [sort of] things. They tend to be quite expensive," he states.

The beauty of online dating is that it is relatively cheap and there is no longer a stigma attached to it, which might have put people off in the past, Mr Spalton states.

During the past five years, it has been accepted as the norm, which is a change in stance from the situation in the past decade, he adds.

Those who decide to head on a first date might be wise to remember advice from dating expert Laura Bilotta, who recently told Canadian publication Metro London that people should ask open-ended questions to encourage their partner to talk.
