Online dating is being used by many people and is no longer thought of in the same way as it once was.
That is the view of a writer from the Waikato Times, who says: "It's more mainstream than you might think."
She spoke to Shannon Lawton, who found her husband via an internet dating site nine years ago.
Ms Lawton explains she had just moved to a different area and "wanted to find new friends and maybe a new boyfriend".
The singleton exchanged emails with her future husband and used instant messaging before meeting up in person and deciding to wed.
They now have two children together and Ms Lawton explains her partner was the first person she talked to on the web.
Single soldiers keen to ensure their profiles stand out from the crowd might consider following the advice of artist and performer R Luke Dubois, who recently told ABC News many people are open and honest online because they want to be noticed.
