Online dating has many advantages, such as allowing people to select individuals with the same interests as themselves.

It is also known to appeal to those who do not like the thought of heading to a bar to meet a potential love interest, as this might not always lead to a long-lasting relationship.

Nina Lorez Collins tells the Huffington Post there are also other benefits to the platform, particularly for people who do not have much experience of dating and are unsure of where to start.

"It's great practice. If you haven't been out there in a while, or if like me, you've never dated, there's a huge learning curve," Ms Lorez Collins notes.

She also believes the web is good for users' self-esteem, as it is a nice feeling to see somebody respond to a profile to say they are interested in its contents.

Relationships writer Jim Duzak recently suggested that these profiles should reflect favourably on a person, as they are a form of salesmanship, the Green Valley News reported.
