Online dating could prove to be the perfect option for middle-aged people who are looking to meet a new partner.

According to relationships expert and researcher Judith Gere, a graduate student at the University of Toronto, it gets harder to find a love interest at an older age, the Ottawa Citizen reports.

"Think of teenagers, they have a wide social network, they go out and they have of a lot of opportunities to meet people," she suggests.

However, with time these social circles decrease and it is often the case that middle-aged individuals only mingle with their work colleagues.

This was the case for online dating user Diana MacDonald, who told the publication she believes everybody should be honest on their internet profiles, as any lies will often be discovered when potential partners meet in person.

Dating expert and psychologist Jo Hemmings recently suggested online dating can boost confidence and get singletons out into the public domain, the Daily Mail reported.
