Single soldiers looking for love via the internet do not appear to be alone in their quest, as it has been claimed the economic uncertainty of recent years has resulted in a significant upturn in the amount of people using online dating.

The Independent reports that more singles than ever have been logging on to the web during the recession – a time when many other industries have struggled.

According to the newspaper, the collective threats that people could become both financially insecure and emotionally vulnerable have led to individuals trying different avenues to find a partner.

"Now that we have to consider exactly where every penny is going … it has become apparent that we receive most rewards from the relationships in our lives," the source explained.

Online dater Leigh Mosquera recently told the Atlanta Post that looking for a mate on the world wide web can help a person to learn how to build up certain levels of trust.
