Dr Larry Rosen, a professor of psychology at California State University-Dominguez Hills, said communicating over the web can lead to people – such as single soldiers – wanting to meet in person.

The specialist noted spending time on the internet is a popular hobby, especially for youngsters.

"These kids feel less shy and more honest communicating online than in real life. That’s how they’ve communicated all their whole lives," the expert added.

Dr Rosen explained web interaction has redefined the meaning of the term ‘friend’, which now accounts for people who share information with others, rather than spending time with them in the flesh.
