Single soldiers looking for love will be able to cast their net far and wide thanks to online dating.

According to the Daily Mail, the popularity of internet courting has resulted in a growing number of people keen to take part in long-distance dating – or 'lodding', as it has become known.

The newspaper claimed it is now just as important to be able to venture great distances for a first meet-up as it is to impress with the right clothes, choice of venue and sense of humour.

It noted the average singleton is now prepared to journey 23 miles for a first date, while some would be willing to travel the 100 miles between Bristol and London, the 96 miles from Manchester to Birmingham and the 75 miles separating Leeds and Newcastle, in an effort to find a soulmate.

A recent article in the Economist predicted online dating activity is likely to spike in the period between Christmas and Valentine's Day.
