Single soldiers in search of a serious and long-lasting relationship might find what they are looking for through online dating.

The system can result in marriage, as evidenced by a story in the New York Times.

According to the newspaper, Midge Woolsey and Jerry Stolt tied the knot after they met over the web.

Ms Woolsey, host of a daytime radio programme in New York, met Mr Stolt via an internet dating site in December 2008 – resulting in a romance that has seen them wed in less than two years.

She explained she was lucky in love after implementing a dating system that saw her try and keep at least three men on a revolving list of active dates.

But it was her husband’s initial persistence that won her over.

She observed: “Every time the date would end, Jerry would say ‘When are we going to see each other again?'”

The Sydney Morning Herald recently advised online daters to remain optimistic when searching for a partner and to remain positive a suitable mate can be found.
