Single soldiers turning to the internet to find a prospective partner may find there is more to the medium than first meets the eye, it has been suggested.

Writing for Psychology Today, Todd Essig noted online dating can be complex and users should remember that the people they are hoping to meet can be complicated souls.

The expert observed: "Complex circuits of desire and opportunity are being created between what is on the screen and what is in the experience and fantasies of the person at the keyboard."

He described the world wide web as a potentially convenient meeting place for singletons who would never have otherwise known each other.

The forum enables them to show interest in another subscriber as a precursor to actual flirting, Mr Essig added.

In a recent article for the Huffington Post, Meredith Fineman suggested online courtship can provide people with greater experience in the world of dating.
