CNBC correspondent Jane Wells stated online dating has been "one of the great success stories of the internet".

The industry has surprised technology analysts with its rapid take off and likened it to other in-demand web-based businesses such as virtual bazaar eBay, the journalist noted.

Ms Wells observed she herself knows several people who have been lucky in love after meeting over the internet.

She cited recent reports that claim, in the US alone, 40 million individuals have turned to the web to meet a possible soulmate and the online dating sector is now valued at over $1 billion (£68 million).

Writing on the Huffington Post blog, Paige Parker recently advised those creating a dating profile online to ensure they use correct spelling and grammar, as failure to do so can be a real turn-off.
