People can use online dating sites to hook with someone they would not normally choose.

This is the assertion made by James Preece, the dating guru at onlinedatingclinic.com, who observed the sheer volume of options means there is a chance to meet a singleton who is different from a person's normal type.

He continued by saying that individuals could find that users "catch your eye for a variety of reasons".

First-timers should put some time and effort in to finding out how the process works, while after three or four messages back and forth they need to think about meeting face-to-face.

"If people have a really good profile and … sell their best features and the best things about their personality – they will get more attention," Mr Preece remarked.

The expert – who has authored the book The Insider's Dating Guide – went on to note phone conversations should be brief, as people do not want to run out of things to say to each other when they meet up.
