Single soldiers looking to date someone new should see it as a fun activity and not a rush to find out information.

This is if comments from Journal Now columnist Amy Alkon are anything to go by, after she was recently asked by a reader why online dating was not quite going as planned.

The person in question said she would set up a date and time at which to speak on the phone with potential suitors – but nine times out of ten, they would fail to make themselves available.

Ms Alkon suggested that they might be a bit wary of such rigid requirements so early on in a relationship and instead it tends to be more successful if a relaxed attitude is adopted.

"When you do get on the phone with a guy, step away from the computer and your spreadsheet of questions. Your goal shouldn't be vacuuming him for data; it should be having fun getting to know him," she added.

Anyone thinking of trying this type of dating might want to keep in mind the comments, but remember to take things slowly and not give away too much personal information until they feel ready.
