Online dating is an increasingly appealing option for older people who are looking for love.

According to research by Experian Hitwise, there has been a 39 per cent increase in the number of individuals using the web for this purpose in the over-55s age bracket.

Gian Gonzaga, author of Dating the Second Time Around, told the New York Times that once people reach this age they have a "deep comprehension about what's important in a relationship".

"If you get married at 50, you can look forward to 20 [to] 25 years of marriage," Mr Gonzaga observed.

So single soldiers who are getting older and still have not found that perfect partner may be tempted to try out the web to rectify this situation.

This comes after a survey carried out by OnePoll – and commissioned by Orangina – discovered most women see an average man of 5ft 10in, dark haired and in full-time employment as their ideal husband.
