There may be a theory that online dating is for young, web-savvy individuals, but it is in fact just as effective for older people.

Plenty of blossoming relationships involving people in their 60s and 70s have been started online, with these people perhaps more likely to know exactly what they want from a prospective partner.

Miss Lonelyhearts, who writes for the Winnipeg Free Press, has responded to a reader's letter in which she revealed her 72-year-old sister has been using dating sites and that she is tempted to give it a try herself.

The expert told the reader a good first idea is to talk to her sister to find out exactly what she has learnt since being online, while working out how to spot those who might be wasting her time is another great skill to have.

Once the individual is confident in being able to do this, there is no harm in having some nice photographs taken and signing up to a site. Miss Lonelyhearts even advised her to "have some fun", which should be easy online.

As you get older, you might find it is hard to meet new people and that you do not get invited to all the social occasions you once used to attend. This is where online dating can come in incredibly handy.

Simply by signing up to a website, you will have access to a pool of hundreds or even thousands of single men and women who could be looking for exactly the same thing as you.

What's more, you can use dating sites whenever you want, so if all your free time is in the morning or late at night, it will not be a problem as you can respond to messages whenever suits.

The news source said around one in four relationships now start on the internet, underlining how much of an opportunity you are missing out on if you fail to give it a go.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801701175-ADNFCR
