A family fun day held in Newcastle has raised over £2,500 for Help for Heroes (H4H).

Hundreds of people went along to the event, which was organised by Newcastle Building Society and had a dog show, fancy-dress competition, inflatable slide, face-painting and a bouncy castle, the News Guardian reports.

It is part of a year-long commitment made by members of staff at the lender to collect cash for the military charity.

Gillian Tiplady, head of corporate social responsibility at Newcastle Building Society, told the paper: "We had an absolutely brilliant day, with so much fun and laughter all through the event."

They hope this is the first step in a process that will eventually see them raise over £100,000 for H4H.

Ms Tiplady is delighted with the start they have made and feels it is important that as a mutual organisation they have a tangible contribution to the community.
