A captain was left very embarrassed after he crashed a newly-built luxury liner into a bridge.

Pearl No 7 was making its maiden voyage in Wenzhou, China, when Guo Lai tried to squeeze under the crossing.

However, he forgot to factor in the effect of the tide and ended up colliding with the solid structure and destroying one of its chimneys as a result.

Luckily for Mr Lai, there were no passengers or cargo on the boat so no one was hurt – although I'm sure his ego is now bruised.

When you consider £28 million has been spent on building the ship, I reckon he'll be in for a talking to from his bosses over the gaffe.

It remains to be seen whether Mr Lai will be allowed to take the liner out for another spin, but if I owned the boat I'd look for a new captain asap.
