If you say the word Marmite to anyone, invariably the phrase 'You either love it or hate it' will come up.

It seems that people in New Zealand cannot get enough of the stuff, as the country has been put on red alert due to a shortage of the sandwich spread.

The factory where it is made was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes last year and so production of the foodstuff has been halted.

However, when it emerged the nation was about to run out, there were scenes of panic buying as people seek to make sure they can still enjoy the treat.

One retailer stated: "We anticipate running out of stock of Marmite in the next two to three weeks across all our stores and unfortunately we have no control of the situation."

It seems like a fairly ridiculous situation, as even the country's prime minister John Key has come out and expressed his worry about the lack of Marmite and what it will mean for his sandwiches.
