Taking a dip in the sea in a foreign country can always be a nervous experience, particularly if you are only too aware of the dangers lurking beneath the surface.

Sharks are a fear that many of us have when we are hitting the waves off Australia, South Africa and in the Indian Ocean, and in some cases the thought of them might even be enough to keep you on the shore. But that is such a shame, as it means you miss out on the chance to surf or swim in some of the world's most beautiful waters.

As such, a brand new invention could be of tremendous interest. Entrepreneurs Hamish Jolly and Craig Anderson have come up with a wetsuit that they believe is largely invisible to sharks.

The pair undertook a two-year project alongside the University of Western Australia's Oceans Institute and came up with the unique design. The theory behind it is that the wetsuit will make a person wearing it look less like a seal, which is among the most common prey for a shark.

Mr Anderson explained: "It's based on new breakthrough science which is all about visionary systems for predatory sharks. We've been able to interpret that science and convert that into, basically, materials that create some confusion for sharks' visual systems."

Research shows that sharks have a different perception of light to humans and this, combined with their colour blindness, means that someone wearing a striped garment can be almost invisible to them.

The wetsuit could now become a must-have for everybody who is packing to go away on a tropical holiday on the beach. Adding the item to a holiday wardrobe may be enough to boost your chances of avoiding the attention of a shark, should you cross one's path.

However, it is worth remembering that the wetsuit retails for around £250, so anybody who is extremely worried about sharks should probably get saving as soon as possible.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801614756-ADNFCR
