Nine people who took part in the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday (September 16th) raised money for the Royal British Legion (RBL).

Royal Navy aircraft engineer Brett Runham took on a greater challenge than most though, as he completed the 13-mile run in full body armour weighing 15kg.

He is only back from a 15-week deployment in Afghanistan and managed to cross the finishing line in two hours, 24 minutes and 37 seconds.

Mr Runham admitted the only reason he was able to get around the course so quickly was because of the fantastic support he received from the crowd.

Speaking about his reasons for raising money for the RBL, he said: "Over the years my family have been involved with supporting the legion. But since I joined [the navy] I've found out more about the extent of the legion's work."

RBL north east community fundraiser Rachel Jobson praised the dedication of Mr Runham in finishing the run.
