Some online daters will consider the name of a person before deciding whether or not to reply.

According to research by the Humboldt University in Berlin, ladies are less likely to contact people called Kevin, Justin and Marvin.

However, singletons known as Jacob, Alexander and Max could be in luck as they have been picked out as among the best names for those looking for love on the web.

Jochen Gebauer, who was the leader of the study, stated: "Mails sent from an Alexander were clicked on 102 per cent more times than those from a Kevin".

As part of the experiment, 47,000 people were given profiles without any photos and they had to decide whether or not to reply based on this.

It follows on from a study carried out by the University of Oldenburg – located in Lower Saxony in Germany – which found teachers discriminated against individuals with certain names.
