Having 260 tonnes of chocolate, especially at this time of year, probably sounds like something of a dream to chocoholics the world over. Think about how many stockings – not to mention stomachs – you could fill with an amount of chocolate that large!

However, it appears that a group of thieves who made off with just that amount of the treat a few months ago have found out the cost of having eyes larger than their stomachs, with a large part of the haul having mysteriously having turned up in Italy more than four months after going missing in August.

The Lindor chocolate originally disappeared in a heist this August without a trace, with the thieves making off with somewhere in the region of €8 million (£4.5 million). While the majority of that chocolate remains unaccounted for, some of it is now back in police hands.

According to local police, 50 tonnes of the treat was discovered near Naples in Italy after having originally been snatched from Milan in the summer. Lindt, the maker of Lindor, will no doubt be happy to have this stock back (after all it's worth about £850,000), but we're not sure it would be fit to sell at this stage.

In another discovery, 20 tonnes were also reported to have been found in a warehouse near Naples, but that still leaves 190 tonnes out there somewhere…if it hasn't already been eaten that is!

Up until this point, two delivery drivers involved in the transportation of the chocolate have been arrested in connection with the missing treats, but there is no news on where the rest of the haul might be.

Elsewhere in the world of crazy food news, a woman has reacted with horror after her son reported to her that he had discovered the baked corpse of a small spider in a loaf of bread bought from her local supermarket. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801765917-ADNFCR
