One woman is hoping to raise £5,000 for Help for Heroes by walking across the Moroccan desert.

Joanne Thompson has agreed to do the Sahara trek – which is the distance equivalent of two-and-a-half marathons – after gaining inspiration from her brother Daniel Smith, who is in the army, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The 25-year-old from Padiham said she was keen to do something for the aid organisation and spotted this opportunity on their website.

Ms Thompson added: "I chose the Morocco walk because it was different. They also offered a trip to Kilimanjaro, but I wanted to do something no-one had heard of before."

She noted trips to the sauna have been getting her ready for the heat in the African country.

This comes after it was announced earlier this week that this year's Huntingdon Grafham Water Lions Club annual safari walk for hero soldiers will take place on May 15th.
