Whether you're looking for love online or are just looking to expand your friendship circle, there are right and wrong ways to do this. We know it can be frustrating if you don't meet someone off the bat, but it's important that you don't fall into bad habits as this could harm your chances even more.

As well as being patient when online dating or friend searching, there are a number of mistakes you should definitely avoid. Not only will they put people off talking to you, they could actually mean you get a bad online reputation. To ensure this doesn't happen, steer clear of these big online dating mistakes:

Mass messaging

Sending out mass messages may seem like the best way to meet someone, but it is a really bad idea. A lot of people use mass messaging to contact dozens of other online users at the same time, without even checking profiles to see if it is a good match.

You can usually tell when an initial message has been used several times before as it will be impersonal and not reference anything written in a profile, which can instantly put people off.

However, the main problem with mass messaging is that it can lead to mass rejection, which can really get your spirits down. Having a lot of people ignore you or send negative messages back can be too much to deal with, so avoid this by being careful about the people you contact.

Taking rejection badly

There's nothing worse than a sore loser unless it's one who decides to go all keyboard warrior when someone says they aren't interested. Under no circumstances should you insult, be rude or lose your temper at someone who doesn't want to take things further.

Not only can it lead to you getting reported, it is generally just bad form and totally uncalled for. After all, how would you feel if someone did that to you?

In the age of social media, a lot of people are taking screenshots of messages like this and posting them online, so not only could you make a fool of yourself, you could get named and shamed publicly.

Making it physical

Yes, someone may be really attractive, but this shouldn't be the only reason to message them. How many messages do you think they get in a day telling them they're pretty? While one or two might be nice, it can get a bit grating after a while, especially if they have filled in their profile and stated their other interests.

While you want to be attracted to someone, their appearance can't be the only thing that draws you to them. You need to have things in common beyond looks in order for a relationship to work, so don't use physicality as the main point in the conversation or the only reason you message someone.

Being entitled

It may be rude and disheartening when someone doesn't message you back, but you are not entitled to a response every time you contact someone or within a few minutes of your message. The person you contact may not have seen your message, might be on holiday or could be dealing with other things that mean online dating is the last thing on their mind.

Getting irritated and sending snarky messages to someone when they don't get back to you is childish and uncalled for. Plus, you could actually be ruining your chances, as messages moaning about them not getting back to you will be the first thing they see when they do come online, making them less likely to get back to you.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801822994-ADNFCR
