Mental health charity Mind has been given £300,000 from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) to help set up a support service in Southend.

Head of fundraising at the third sector group Barbara Warner said the money is "much needed" as they group seeks to tackle post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"In south-east Essex we have a high level of ex-military personnel who are trying to deal with the challenges of PTSD, but [are] having problems accessing the help they need," she added.

It means residents – some of whom will be ex-servicemen and women – in Castle Point, Rochford and Southend who are struggling can expect to receive help from the organisation.

Ms Warner said the needs of the people are very specific and so this cash will go towards providing tailored solutions.

BIG is also giving money for projects in Leighton Buzzard, Luton and Norfolk, which will see its investment in the east of England rise to over £800,000.
