A charity that provides help to wounded British soldiers is to get an early Christmas present in the form of a £1 million government donation.

Fisher House will use the cash injection to build housing for the families of injured servicemen near Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, so soldiers' loved ones can be near them while they receive treatment, the Sun reports.

The grant will total £1 million and is coming from the £35 million worth of fines paid by banks in the wake of the Libor rate-rigging scandal earlier this year.

Prime minister David Cameron told the newspaper: "It took about two minutes for the chancellor and I to decide what we wanted to do with the money from bankers who have been misbehaving. We wanted to know what more we could do for the wonderful people who serve our country."

All the money raised from the Libor fines will go towards military causes or schemes that help the needy, with the beneficiaries to be decided by a 'Heroes Committee' of senior ministers and charity officials set up by the PM.
