The Sun has launched its Military Awards – in association with BAE Systems – for 2011, aiming to support soldiers and recognise the bravery of those serving in the armed forces.

Prince Charles – whose sons Prince William and Prince Harry have completed service – has asked members of the public to nominate those they believe should get a special mention.

"Our troops need just as much bravery and determination when overcoming life-changing injuries, both mental and physical, as they do when facing the enemy in combat. And we can all help," he said.

Nominations for the accolades close on September 12th and the ceremony is set to be televised on ITV around Christmas time.

Categories include Outstanding Soldier, True Grit, Best Unit and Overcoming Adversity, with a panel of judges and celebrities deciding on the winners.

Prince Charles said the armed forces have proved they are not only needed in the Middle East, as they have recently been required to assist in conflicts occurring in North Africa.
