Michael Ball has lent his support to brave troops injured while fighting for their country.

The singer and actor helped to launch an Edinburgh-based campaign that aims to raise cash for the Help for Heroes cause, the Scotsman reports.

People attending the city's Hogmanay street party are being asked to send a text message – detailing their New Year resolutions – that will be displayed on large screens on New Year's Day along Princes Street.

And 25 pence from each submission will then be donated to the charity.

Ball – currently appearing in the musical Hairspray at Edinburgh's Playhouse Theatre – described Help for Heroes as a "fantastic charity".

He said: "My resolution for 2011 is to build more bridges and what better way to put that into practice than to encourage you all to text your messages."

The Sun newspaper and Best Buy UK recently teamed up to send ten free iPads out to soldiers currently serving on the front line in Afghanistan.
