Single soldiers keen to boost their fitness should look into buying new trainers.

That is the advice of Jon Lipsey, editor of Men's Fitness magazine, who suggests: "Wearing the right footwear can make you perform better and will also help you enjoy what you're doing because they'll reduce your chances of getting injured."

Individuals who enjoy heading off on a long run would be wise to get something that has plenty of cushioning, although sprinters may need shoes that are lightweight.

It is a good idea to head to a specialist at a running shop, as they should be able to assess the consumer's technique and decide what item is best for them.

Socks should also be take into account, as the wrong ones could leave people with painful blisters to deal with, Mr Lipsey warns.

Some 77 per cent of individuals confess they do not wear shoes designed for the sport they are taking part in, according to the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.
