Single soldiers searching for a partner may be attracted to a woman because of her physical beauty rather than her social status, a study has suggested.

However, researchers from the University of Wales found females often consider a man's wealth when selecting a long-term suitor.

The report has been published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour and was led by Michael Dunn, a psychologist at the institute.

According to the expert, men "focus more intently on physical attractiveness cues and these are clearly correlated with the years of maximum fertility".

Women, on the other hand, tend to look at social status when picking a man – and this is often only assumed by older gentleman, he added.

He therefore dismissed the notion of the toyboy as a myth.

Stephanie Castillo recently observed for YourTango that people are becoming more confident when using the internet to find a partner as the stigma of online dating has long passed.
