A man is walking the length of the UK as he seeks to raise cash for an armed forces charity.

Former builder Melvyn Smith is undertaking the 1,000-mile challenge in order to collect much-needed funds for Help for Heroes (H4H), the Carmarthen Journal reports.

For ten-to-12 weeks, he will be lacing up his boots as he bids to make it from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Initially Mr Smith was only looking to get a couple of hundred pounds, but within a month he had already reached £3,000.

Speaking about H4H, he stated: "I feel [it] is doing a wonderful job in supporting all our injured servicemen and women in the armed forces."

His wife Chris is following him every step of the way in a motor home that they stay in overnight.

So far, Mr Smith has managed to cover half of the distance without suffering any problems with blisters, while he has only faced one wet morning.
