Break-ups affect people in different ways and saying goodbye to someone you love can be a particularly difficult and emotional time in anyone's life.

I'm sure most of us have, at one time or another, made a desperate plea to a partner to give a relationship another chance in the hope that it will all work out and we'll live together happily ever after.

But relatively few of us have probably gone to the lengths of one man in the US, who has pulled off a bizarre stunt at a shopping centre in the hope of impressing his estranged wife and getting their marriage back on track.

Serge Vorobyov, 29, took to the Mall of America in Minnesota to perform an unusual gesture that delighted hundreds of people – but not the woman he had aimed to make happy.

He stepped up to a balcony near the top of the shopping centre and dropped $1,000 worth of $1 bills on to the floors below. Hundreds of shoppers clamoured to get hold of the money, which fell as he played the classic Dean Martin hit Let It Snow.

A video of the incident has been uploaded to YouTube and has become an instant hit, with people all over the world praising Mr Vorobyov's generosity during the festive season. It shows him releasing the cash and bargain hunters rushing to collect the notes as they fall.

He had invited his wife along to the ritual in the hope that it would impress her and persuade her to get back with him. Unfortunately she did not show up, so it remains unclear whether his act will have the desired effect.

But he can at least console himself with the fact that he has become a YouTube hit and made Christmas shopping a little more affordable for hundreds of others.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801668364-ADNFCR
