A man refused to shave his beard or cut his hair for one year to raise funds for a military charity.

Giuseppe De Vita got rid of his tresses on New Year's Eve 2010 and did not groom them again until New Year's Eve 2011, the John O'Groat's Journal reports.

All of the money he collected for the stunt has gone to Help for Heroes.

Mr De Vita decided to attempt it after a friend of his was killed in duty in Afghanistan.

After he completed it, the 22-year-old observed that "it felt great" to be able to get rid of the long, scraggly beard.

"A fair few people stopped as they were passing on the High Street and gave donations. It was worth it in the end," Mr De Vita remarked.

Those who do not fancy taking on such a hirsute challenge can instead complete a charity trek, run or bike.
