As crimes go, this is definitely one of the strangest we've seen so far this year. In a period where we've heard of a man jailed for assaulting his girlfriend with a burger and a woman arrested for driving to a police station drunk when she was trying to pick up her partner at a club, it may seem hard to be the very weirdest criminal around. However, Portsmouth's own Anthony Stallard has achieved just that.

The 24-year-old unemployed man from Portsmouth was arrested last year and subsequently fined in court, after he was caught pretending to be a ghost in a local graveyard. He was reported to police after locals saw him throwing himself backwards, waving his arms around and making "woooh" noises.

The fact that his japes were taking place within earshot of mourners at the graveyard makes his crime a bit more sinister than it might initially seem, but the disrespect shown by Stallard makes his crime all the more baffling.

As well as impersonating a ghost, the man was also charged with playing football in the graveyard with his friends, at which time he was seen kicking the ball against headstones. He was also singing loudly and generally being disruptive while people were trying to mourn their loved ones.

Speaking of his most bizarre actions, the prosecution said they assumed he was trying to be a ghost, and Mr Stallard was subsequently fined £75, as well as being handed a 12-month suspended sentence for his antics.

Denise Saunders, defending, said: "He has accepted that his behaviour, if it had been outside of a cemetery, would not have been inappropriate.

"But inside a cemetery, while people are grieving for their loved ones, it might be."ADNFCR-2867-ID-801777377-ADNFCR
